Google Ads Quality Score explained (and how to actually move it)
Quality Score is the most-cited and least-understood number in Google Ads. Here's what it actually measures, what it doesn't, and the three levers that move it.
Open any Google Ads account and you'll see a Quality Score column. Most operators glance at it, see a 4/10 somewhere, and think 'I should fix that.' Then they forget about it for six months.
Here's what the score actually is, why it matters, and what to do.
What Quality Score actually measures
It's a 1-10 score Google assigns to each keyword in your search campaigns. It's computed from three sub-components:
- Expected CTR: how likely your ad is to be clicked when shown for this keyword, relative to other ads in the auction.
- Ad relevance: how closely your ad copy matches the user's search intent.
- Landing page experience: how relevant + fast your landing page is, AND whether it matches the ad's promise.
Each sub-component is rated Above average / Average / Below average — and those three labels roll up into the 1-10 score.
Why it matters more than people realize
Quality Score directly affects two things:
- Ad rank — higher score, better position at lower bid.
- Cost per click — Google charges you less when your QS is high. A 10/10 keyword can cost 50% less than a 4/10 keyword bidding the same amount.
The practical impact: a campaign with average QS of 7 will outperform an identical campaign with QS of 4 by 30-40% on CPA, even with the same bids and the same budget.
What QS is NOT
It's not a measure of your overall account health. A keyword with QS 3 can still be profitable if it converts at 20%. A keyword with QS 9 can be unprofitable if conversions are zero.
It's also not real-time — Google updates it on a delay, sometimes weeks. Don't bid-adjust on yesterday's QS change.
The three levers that actually move it
Most operators try to game QS by writing more ad copy variants. That's the wrong lever. The three real ones:
**1. Match the search intent.** If someone searches 'best leather wallet under $50', your ad headline should mention leather wallets AND price. 'Premium accessories' won't cut it. This moves Ad relevance from Below average → Average in days.
**2. Fix your landing page speed.** Largest Contentful Paint > 4 seconds is a near-guarantee of Below average landing-page-experience. Compress your hero image. Defer non-critical JS. PageSpeed Insights will tell you exactly what to fix.
**3. Match the landing page content to the ad.** If your ad says '30% off leather wallets', the landing page hero needs to say the same thing. Not the homepage. Not the catalog. A dedicated landing page with the offer above the fold.
